Recycled Heat

Heat Keeper

Heat Keeper

I learned and important lesson today. The air that comes out of the drying vent is nit “bad” air. Its actually “usable”. That is, recyclable, and can be used to save on heating costs. What a great idea!

If you have to use your dryer, you might as well recycle all that warm, fresh-smelling air!

The Heat Keeper attaches to your dryer’s exhaust tubing and re-directs hot air back into your home. It has a safety valve to make sure pressure doesn’t back up and a removeable lint cap.

It should only be used with electric dryers, not ones that run on gas. And the air will be moist, so it might fog up your windows – although in the winter months, this could help with the severely dry air. And in summer months, you can flip a switch that allows the air to vent back outside. From coolgreengadgets.com

Green Clean and Lean

Green charity sounds like a nice idea but can it do more than just “save the planet”. Not that that is not important of course. It is quite important but so is poverty, or rather being rid of poverty.

So what is the getting-rid-of-poverty side of Green Charity? Is it only (as I have written on before) about finding and distributing second hand furniture an appliances?

ITS ALSO about living lean….

Holy Ozone

Hole in the Ozone Layer

Hole in the Ozone Layer

I came across a picture of the hole in the ozone layer and it got me thinking. We, all living beings, were given this planet to live on. One of the responsibilities that comes along with that is of course guarding it and all its inhabitants from harm.

One of the nicest things about working in a “green” charity is that while helping the planet, we get to help people as well. Or perhaps it would be better to say, while helping people, we get to help the planet as well. Whether it be acting as the go between to pass on “preowned” clothing, furniture, or perhaps even dishes, it’s one way that we reduce the need to re-manufacture many of the goods that have already been produced.

In this way we make our own contribution in guarding the planet. And that indeed is holy task.

Why Green

Posted by admin under Green Charity, Social Justice, Solutions to Poverty, Torah

Think Green

Taking care of mother earth

Since the industrial revolution, people have become disconnected from the very life forces that sustain us. Rather than seeing ourselves as an intricate and essential part of life’s cycle, we believe that we have power over Earth’s ecosystems. As indicated by mounting scientific research from all corners of the globe, that approach is simply not sustainable, and our current way of living must be overhauled.

During the next century, as population doubles and resources available per person drop by one-half to three-fourths, humankind will have to drastically alter fundamental ways of thinking and operating in order to survive. The number one challenge that will face today’s children as they enter adulthood will be how to reconcile the impact of their daily lives with the limitations of our global ecosystems.

Green design is one of the ways we can limit our impact on the world’s systems.

Green Tzedakah?

Posted by admin under Green Charity, Social Justice

Save the World

Save the World

Well, I guess the place to start would be to ask, what is Tzedakah? As we have pointed out, and cited many times before in the is blog, “Tzedakah” is not only about donating money. No!. Its about a lot more.

Tzedakah includes good deeds, free loans, emotional support, and a lot more. (And yes, also giving “money”). The n=bottom line is that its about relieving others of their pain. No, not in a medical way, though assisting waith that is also a big part of Tzedakah. Its about relieving people of their worries. Their struggles.

So where does “green” fit into all this. Where’s the environment’s place in the world of charity?

THE ANSWER IS that its in the area of second hand goods. From clothes to furniture and appliances to cars. The moment someone is ready to part with that old sofa, those old clothes, that used, but good refrigerator, there is always someone who is in need of just such items and can’t always afford to buy new.

By coordinating these to sides of the used-goods-cycle, Karmey Hesed is just the place to turn to. Each and every day Karmey Hesed is the matchmaker for both sides of the transaction.
